THIS IS THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND SERVICES THIS GRANT REQUEST WILL EXPAND AND ENRICH

Alexandra, a young widowed mother of a small child, found herself homeless, without a high school degree, skills, or job training. In this video, Alexandra tells her story of how she came to New Milford Affordable Housing/s Brookside Commons supportive housing program and how Brookside has helped her acquire the education, training, and skills she needed to not only never be unhoused again, succeed, but also become a productive contributing member of the community.

New Milford Affordable Housing supportive program provides those living there and formerly homeless the life skills education they need. These include:

  • Employment Skills (what is a resume, how to write a resume, how to interview for a job, how to negotiate a salary, how to dress for an interview and work, how to manage conflict at the workplace, etc.)

  • Financial Management (having a checking account, balancing a checking account, paying bills, budgeting, obtaining credit, credit management, learning how to negotiate successfully, etc.)

  • Home Management skills (how to do laundry, how to clean, how to cook healthy meals, how to manage a household)

  • Obtaining a GED or High School or Higher Education or Trade Skills

  • Helping find daycare and completing all paperwork, if needed

  • Helping find ESL classes and becoming fluent in English, if needed.

  • Helping obtain mental health services, if needed.
